Why did Learn to Learn choose the Barton Reading & Spelling System?
We chose the Barton Reading & Spelling System for its multisensory approach as it takes visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners all into account. Additionally, the lessons are taught in a thought-out, sequential order that builds on the concepts taught in the previous lesson.
Why is multi-sensory tutoring effective for dyslexic sutdents?
Multi-sensory tutoring is highly effective for dyslexic students because it engages multiple senses—sight, sound, and touch—simultaneously, helping to reinforce learning. Dyslexic students often struggle with traditional teaching methods that focus primarily on visual or auditory input. A multi-sensory approach helps by activating different areas of the brain, making it easier for students to retain information and build connections between letters, sounds, and words. This method also caters to different learning styles, allowing dyslexic students to grasp concepts more effectively and develop stronger reading, writing, and spelling skills.
What happens at the initial consultation?
At the initial consultation, we conduct a thorough assessment to understand your student's needs. This begins with an initial interview to discuss your student's academic challenges and goals. We then perform a Barton Screening to determine if the Barton Reading & Spelling System is appropriate for your student. Following this, we administer the Word Identification and Spelling Test (WIST) to evaluate current reading and spelling abilities, and the CITE Assessment to identify their preferred learning style. These steps help us create a personalized tutoring plan tailored to your student’s unique learning needs.
Why does Learn to Learn require two sessions per week?
We require two 50 minutes sessions per week as per Susan Barton who developed the Barton Reading & Spelling System. This recommendation comes from student retention of the information taught in each tutoring session. When students are not consistently meeting, they forget material, and review is required. This slows down student progress and makes tutoring sessions not as productive as they should be.
How will I know there is a tutor to meet my child’s specific needs?
Our tutors are experienced educators who are well-versed in forming relationships with students to understand their specific needs. Our tutors have to complete an extensive Barton Reading & Spelling System training process that includes a screening with the director.
What age can students begin their journey at Learn to Learn?
At Learn to Learn, students can begin their journey as early as kindergarten. We are able to screen young learners to identify potential reading or learning difficulties and provide support tailored to their needs. Our services are designed to help students from kindergarten through college, ensuring personalized instruction at every stage of their academic journey.
How can I ensure my student is making progress?
To ensure your student is making progress at Learn to Learn, we conduct a Word Identification and Spelling Test (WIST) every six months to track their development. Additionally, at the end of each Barton Level, students are required to pass a post-test with a score of 80% or higher. These assessments provide valuable insights into your student’s skills and understanding, allowing you to see their growth and identify any areas that may need further support. Regular communication with our tutors will also help you stay informed about your student’s progress and achievements.
Does Learn to Learn offer one-on-one tutoring?
Yes! This personalized approach allows our tutors to focus exclusively on your student's individual needs, providing tailored instruction that helps them overcome challenges and achieve academic success.
